Catherine Labouré was a French nun belonging to the congregation of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. On July 18, 1830, during her nocturnal meditation, she is said to have had a vision of the Virgin Mary in the chapel of the congregation's mother house in Paris. The Virgin is said to have asked Catherine to strike a medal bearing the image of this vision, promising special graces to all those who would wear it with faith.

Catherine then had a second apparition on November 27, 1830. During this vision, the Virgin Mary was standing on a terrestrial globe, crushing a serpent under her feet. Rays of light emanated from her outstretched hands, symbolizing the graces that Mary showers on the world. Around the image, an inscription appeared: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you."

After these apparitions, Catherine spoke of her experiences to her spiritual director, Father Aladel, who was initially skeptical. However, Catherine's determination and evidence of the graces bestowed upon those who wore the medal led to the minting of the medal in 1832. It is now known as the "Médaille Miraculeuse" or "Médaille de la Rue du Bac". , because the chapel was located on rue du Bac in Paris.
