Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs

Built in the 14th century, the Church of Notre-Dame-la-Principale has a rich history that has evolved over the centuries. In the early 19th century, it became the chapel of the White Penitents, as it transformed into a Dominican convent. This transition marked a turning point in the function of the place, which, after the extinction of the brotherhood, found a new life as a performance hall. Today, the chapel is a treasured space during the Avignon Festival, as well as by the Higher Institute of Performance Techniques. With a capacity of 164 seats, this enclosed space offers an intimate and warm atmosphere, conducive to artistic performances.

The Chapel of the White Penitents has been the birthplace of contemporary text stagings at the Avignon Festival since the 60s, notably with the initiative of Théâtre Ouvert. This emblematic place continues to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse public, hosting since 2014 a series of performances dedicated to young audiences. Its open seating allows spectators to enjoy an immersive experience, fostering a direct contact with the artists and the works presented.
